International Walk and Bike to School Day – The PD PTA Healthy Kids Committee would like to encourage you and your students to walk or bike to school tomorrow, Wednesday Oct 2nd.  Walk and Bike to School Day is a global event that involves communities from all over the world walking or biking to school on the same day.  The class with the most walkers and bikers will receive the coveted Golden Sneaker Award!
DGN Homecoming Update – The DGN Homecoming Parade is this Friday, October 4th!  If you ordered a homecoming shirt, they will be distributed today (Tuesday, October 1st) at dismissal.  Please wear your child’s homecoming t-shirt or PURPLE and bring candy to throw to the crowd. Children in K-3rd grades must be accompanied on the parade route by a parent or guardian.  Remind children to walk and stay with the PD group. Please start walking to North High school right after school as the parade starts at 3:15. Please meet by North’s parking lot at the corner of Prince and Grant.

Reflections – The Reflections program is back again for the 2019-20 school year! This week we will meet with each classroom to discuss the program and gain excitement from the students! Reflections is a National PTA art program where each student is encouraged to submit an entry in one or more of 6 creative categories (Dance Choreography, Film Production, Literature, Visual Arts, Photography, and Music Composition). This year the National PTA Reflections theme is: “Look Within.” Please review the rules carefully before your student begins his or her project(s). 
Scholastic Book Fair – The fall Scholastic Book Fair will be held in the LRC during parent-teacher conferences. Stop by and support the LRC and the love of reading on the following dates:Tuesday, October 15th: 12-3pm and 4:30-8pm and Thursday, October 17th: 4:30-8pm. Student previews will take place on Wednesday and Thursday mornings during students’ book checkout times. Students in grades 3-6 can shop during preview times and may bring a max of $20 to school in an envelope.
STEAM – Currently enrolling for Language Labs and Sticky Fingers Cooking Class. If you would like to be a part of our committee or see if it may be a good fit for your volunteering time, please email Kate Urban at
  • Spanish, French and Mandarin: The Language Labs are back at Pierce Downer this year to host THREE different language classes: French, Spanish, and Mandarin. Go to to register.  Classes began this week and run for 25 weeks. All students grades K-6.
  • Sticky Fingers Cooking Classes – ACT FAST-Classes fill up quickly. Let your child release their inner chef! Students will prepare and eat healthy, international inspired recipes all while learning to cook in a fun, engaging, hands-on and real-world way! 100% nut free, vegetarian and happily accommodate for any and all food allergies. A fall session is being offered for grades K-6 beginning Friday, October 18th from 3-4pm. This class is 7 sessions. Click here for more information and registration details.

MOD Pizza Fundraiser – Join MOD Pizza in supporting Pierce Downer this Thursday, October 3 for lunch, dinner, or both!  Flyers were sent home with your student(s) last week to bring in to MOD (click here to view) or you can access via your phone. MOD will donate 20% of your bill to Pierce Downer.

MOD Pizza is located at 1022 W. Ogden Avenue (next to Jewel).

Panthers Pacers – Please remember to sign up here to volunteer for dates with our Panthers Pacers during recess time! If you leave your cell number in the signup Lisa Henrickson will send you a text the morning of your volunteer spot if Panthers Pacers will be canceled due to inclement weather or field conditions.

Box Tops – Those who have clipped and collected box tops over the year, please send them to school! Box Tops will still be sent in during the transition to the app. The first submission date is November 1st. A box can be found in the Pierce Downer school office where Box Tops can be dropped off. Please place them in a ziploc bag and label how many are in the bag. Keep scanning those receipts, using the Box Top app and helping our school earn more!

Battle of the Bands– Hey Pierce Downer Parents, Please consider signing up to play in a band for Battle of the Bands this year!
