Six Flags Great America “Read to Succeed” Program – Read a book or two over winter break and earn a ticket to Six Flags Great America!  Students who log six hours of reading before Friday, February 16, 2018 will earn a free ticket to Six Flags Great America!  Forms were sent home TODAY (12/19). STEAM-

  • Chess Club – It’s time to sign up for winter Chess Club at PD. Chess Scholars will be offering classes from Monday, January 22nd-April 16th.Please note the time change: 3pm-4pm in the gym and it will run for 10 sessions. No experience necessary; the class is open to all students (K-6). Children will be taught the game and have guided practice time. Click here for flyer and registration.
  • Let’s Build It – New offering! An exhilarating, cutting-edge area of engineering. In this unit, students will design, build, and test various circuits and electronic projects. Instructors will guide students through core concepts of electrical engineering, introducing them to circuits and electrical components. Flyer and registration coming soon.  It will be posted on the PTA Facebook page when available, as well as the next newsletter. Mondays, January 22nd-April 16th, 4pm-5pm.. Open to all students (K-6).
 
REMINDERS
Crossing Guard Collection – LAST CHANCE! If you would like contribute to the Crossing Guards Gift please drop off your donation in the box marked “Crossing Guards” in the front office at school.  If you would like your name listed on the cards please make sure to add your name on your envelope.  No checks please, as the money is going directly to the crossing guards. Please drop off your contribution by the end of school TOMORROW, December 19th. Yorktown Bucks –  If you shopped at Yorktown, save your receipts! You can drop off your receipts at the guest services desk (below the eatery), drop your receipts off in a box the school office or you can drop your receipts off with Lora Dominow at 4925 Saratoga. You can place receipts in the mailbox anytime day or night! Receipts may be dropped off in bulk so feel free to save a few before you drop off! Any receipt can be returned if needed. For every dollar spent, Pierce Downer will receive one point. First place wins $10,000! This is a very easy way to raise money for our school! For more information visit www.yorktowncenter.com/schoolbucks. Any shopping or eating you do at Yorktown Center counts- that includes AMC movies, Target and HomeGoods!

 
Science Olympiad – Mark your calendars for Pierce Downer’s fun-filled Science Olympiad on the evening of Friday, April 13th. There will be activities for all K-6 PD students. Right now, we are looking for adult volunteers to present activities, and for others that can help in a variety of ways. This exciting event takes place every other year at PD.  Please email Mike Schaefer mschaefer8of10@msn.com if you or someone you know can present or volunteer.

Reflections – We are so proud of our Pierce Downer students.  We had 19 entries in this year’s PTA Reflections contest, “Within Reach”.  The entries are an amazing display of our school’s creativity and talent.  Here are our participants:

  • Visual Arts:  K-2nd grade: Greyson Miller, Cassidy Moss, and Priya Fisher; 3rd-5th grade: Ingrid Dombrowski, Micah Principe, Meili Fleener, Avery Miller and Mackenzie Wells; 6th grade: Cara Fleming
  • Film Production:  3rd– 5th grade: Sajan Komanduri and Hannah Klemz; 6th grade: Rajan Fisher
  • Photography:   3rd– 5th grade: Gabe Deaton; 6th grade: Sarah Lampsa and Malini Fisher
  • Dance:  6th grade: Malini Fisher
  • Literature:  K- 2nd grade: Arya Komanduri
  • Music Composition:  3rd-5th grade: Maddie Fleener; 6th grade: Pallavi Fisher

Thank you to all of our participants.  They have recently been judged at Pierce Downer, and then many will proceed to compete at the District level. Those selected will be honored this Wednesday night at a ceremony at Herrick Middle School, with our very own Mrs. Clavenna presenting.  All participants have earned themselves a coupon for a free scoop of ice cream from Everyday’s A Sundae that they will receive in the next couple of weeks.  Great work, students!
