International Walk and Bike to School Day – TOMORROW – The PTA Healthy Kids Committee would like to encourage you and your students to walk or bike to school tomorrow, Wednesday, October 5th. Walk and Bike to School Day is a global event that involves communities from all over the world walking or biking to school on the same day. The class with the most walkers and bikers will receive the coveted Golden Sneaker award!
STEAM Committee – The STEM Committee is now the STEAM Committee! Why? We are adding the Arts! Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics. It’s not about spending less time on STEM subjects and more time on art, it’s about sparking students’ imagination and creativity through the arts. Students can utilize their artistic talents to generate innovative thinking. The Arts offer creativity, imagination and design. It is the way of future with the interactive technology driven 21st century. Art education allows students to learn things in a more open ended way and make them applicable to real life. Arts and creativity are crucial to the sciences, technology and computer science. We will continue offering all our wonderful STEM programs in addition to adding The Arts!
Panther TinkRbot – TinkRbot begins October 17th! Fourth, fifth and sixth graders signed up for this TinkRworks class will bring together motors, micro-computers, electronics, wood and other materials to assemble, program and customize robots that reflect Pierce Downer School spirit! The session runs October 17th-November 14th from 3:10 pm-4:40 pm every Monday except for Halloween. Click on the TinkRbot Flyer to learn more about this great STEAM program and how to register.
Scholarship Chair – The PTA offers a scholarship for PD Alumni who attend DGN. We are looking for someone to help with the logistics that go along with the scholarship (contacting DGN college counselor, email PD alumni, pick up essays from DGN after deadline, distribute to evaluating committee, tabulate scores with a witness, etc. You CANNOT have a current senior at DGN. Picture Retakes – If your student missed Picture Day or you wish to have them re-take their pictures, please be aware that re-takes are scheduled for October 27th. Even if you aren’t purchasing prints, we would like to have all children represented in class composites and our school yearbooks.
