Inside Out Club –  Inside Out Club is coming to Pierce Downer! Inside Out Club is an extension of www.iSupportCommunity.org. iSupportCommunity’s mission is to develop kids with character inside and out. They believe individuals with a foundation in character and volunteerism will make a better future for everyone. The club will meet monthly in the gymnasium from 3pm – 4:15pm, and members will be taught lessons that will focus on the issues in the community (i.e., how it feels to have different disabilities), the charities addressing those issues and provide volunteer and learning activities. There will be two clubs based on grades. Kindergarten- 3rd grade will meet on the following Tuesdays – Oct 24th, Nov 28th and Dec 12th; 4th- 6th grade will meet on the following Thursdays – Oct 26th, Nov 30th and Dec 14th. There will be 25 spots available for K-3rd and 25 spots for 4th-6th. Student Assembly – Singer/Songwriters Justin Roberts and Liam Davis will present two assemblies this Thursday, October 12th. Grades K-3rd will participate in a “SMART PANTS” assembly based on the idea of multiple intelligences, emphasizing that we all have different smarts and talents. 4th- 6th grades will participate in a “You Write The Songs” assembly which guides students through the process of writing their own song as a group, using “The Four S’s of Songwriting”: subject, structure, style and sound. Be sure to ask your kids what they learn this week!

 

REMINDERS


Yorktown Bucks – We are going to make it as easy as possible for PD to win the Yorktown Bucks contest! You can now drop your receipts off in a box the school office or you can drop your receipts off with Lora Dominow at 4925 Saratoga. You can place receipts in the mailbox anytime day or night! Receipts may be dropped off in bulk so feel free to save a few before you drop off! Any shopping or eating you do at Yorktown Center counts, that includes AMC movies, Target and HomeGoods!

 
8th Annual Pierce Downer Haunted House Competition – All students are invited to take part in the 8th Annual Pierce Downer Haunted House Competition. Students can work alone or with one other student to create their own haunted house. This year we will have two categories: (1) houses based on a SINGLE shoe-box (2) tiny houses that measure less than 4 inches in any direction. Decorations and/or accessories can be store-bought; however, please note that haunted house kits from a store are not acceptable and no sound effects are allowed. Bring your finished house to the LRC starting Monday, October 23rd. Voting will take place on Wednesday, October 25th. Please see Ms. Elford if you have any questions.
Chipotle Fundraiser – Thanks to everyone who participated in the PD PTA Chipotle fundraiser last week.  You helped us raise $621.73!

International Walk and Bike to School Day – TOMORROW – The PTA Healthy Kids Committee would like to encourage you and your students to walk or bike to school tomorrow, Wednesday, October 4th.  Walk and Bike to School Day is a global event that involves communities from all over the world walking or biking to school on the same day.  The class with the most walkers and bikers will receive the coveted Golden Sneaker award!

Picture Retakes – If your student missed Picture Day or you wish to have them retake their pictures, please be aware that retakes are scheduled for October 26th.  Even if you aren’t purchasing prints, we would like to have all children represented in class composites and our school yearbooks.

 
 

REMINDERS
 
Reflections – The Reflections program is back again for the 2017-18 school year!  Last week, we met with each classroom to discuss the program and gain excitement from the students!  Reflections is a national PTA art program where each student is encouraged to submit an entry in one or more of 6 creative categories (listed below, along with the general rules and special artist links).  This year’s Reflections theme is:  Within Reach. Click on the links below for detailed guidelines/rules per category from the Illinois PTA.  Please review the rules carefully before your student begins his/her project. Also, please note that NO 3D entries will be allowed this year in the Visual Arts category.
