8/15/17 Weekly Email

Welcome back!  The Pierce Downer PTA is busy planning for the upcoming school year and we want to extend a warm welcome to each of our Pierce Downer families.  PD is a wonderful community school and the job of the PTA is to enhance what the school offers and build a strong community for our children and families.  Our PTA funds many school activities (e.g., field trips, art awareness, assemblies), hosts social events for families (e.g., roller skating party, ice cream social, fun run), and provides unique academic enrichment opportunities for the kids (e.g., Reflections art program, Destination Imagination, Artcot).
 

The PTA primarily communicates through email (piercedownerpta@gmail.comand our web site (piercedownerpta.org).  Each Tuesday the PTA will send an email through Gmail letting parents know about upcoming PTA programs and volunteer opportunities.  We hope all families will become members of the Pierce Downer PTA and share in the voting decisions on all the activities/items our PTA funds.  Membership information to come soon!

Welcome Back Party – Please join us on the school playground for a fun family event on Tuesday, August 22nd from 4:30pm – 6:30pm.  Coach Josh will be providing the music, Skuddlebutts will be selling pizza and a drink for $2.50 and all kids will receive a sweet treat!  There will also be a obstacle courses for all students to play in.  All children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to attend.
 
First PTA Meeting –  The first PTA meeting and New Family Welcome is scheduled for Tuesday, August 29th, at 6:30pm in the school gym. Babysitting is provided.
Volunteer Sign Up – We have many wonderful opportunities for returning and new families to get involved and help with the various PTA activities and events this year!  Feel free to sign up for one activity or many — we encourage all parents to get involved in some way.  This information helps us form committees, especially those that need to be up & running in August (i.e.: New Family Welcome, Room Reps, Copy & LRC Helpers).  Please sign up for what interests you.  Your name/email address will be shared with the committee chair, who will then contact you before the event/task to discuss details.

Art Awareness Chair – We are still looking for a chairperson who will oversee Art Awareness assignments and supplies. Please click on the signup link above if you are interested. Monthly responsibilities include sending out monthly notices and lesson plans to classroom AA volunteers (2 hours/month and can be done from home). Twice a year (mid and end of school year), do inventory of AA cabinet, purchase and replace supplies. Sporadically, pass reimbursement forms onto treasurer, maintain AA cabinets/supplies and answer volunteers’ questions. Requires minimal time, but occasional school visit. School Supply Kits – If you ordered school supply kits from Carlson’s online back in May, they will be delivered directly to the school and will be waiting for the students in their classrooms on the first day of school.  The teachers will direct the students in labeling their supplies using the pre-printed name labels provided by Carlson’s.  Take note of the items that were NOT included in the kits (gym shoes, art smock, old sock, band/orchestra items, etc.) and send those with your student as needed on the first day.

6/6/2017 Weekly Email

Farewell Reception – Thursday, June 8th at 3pm – Please join us in the gym right after school to celebrate our staff who are either retiring or leaving for other positions in the district. We will be be honoring Mr. Sisul, Ms. Jerves, Ms. Mitchell, Mr. Ball, Mr. Larsen and Mr. Mega.  Stop by to say goodbye, drop off a card from your child and celebrate some amazing staff members. For those with allergies, please be aware that cake will be served. **Ms. Jerves will not be at the reception so if you or your student would like to drop something off to thank her, you should do it by Wednesday.

 
Last Call for Check Requests – The PTA needs all check requests turned in on or before the last day of school, Friday, June 9th.  Please contact Anu Fisher at fisheranu@gmail.com or Mariah Cameron mariah_cameron@hotmail.com if you have a check request and you won’t be able to meet the June 9th deadline.  Click here to view the check request form.  Please be sure to include your contact information so we can get your check to you after the school office closes on June 14th.  We also ask that you deposit/cash all PTA reimbursement checks by June 20th.  Thank you in advance!

Summer Math Club – WE NEED MORE VOLUNTEERS!!! Your kids can read or play chess at the library while you work a shift! Give a couple of hours in the morning or evening over the summer to facilitate math packet pick-up and drop-off at the library and hand out prizes for completed math sheets. There will be 3 days to choose from:
  • June 19th and 20th
  • July 10th and 11th
  • July 31st, August 1st and 14th

Kickbowl – Another successful Kickbowl in the books!  Congrats to The Chiefs for being the 2017 Champions!  A special thanks to Sarah Diehl, Jamie Guerin, Leah Thulin, all the Dad Umps and Jr. Umps too!
