DGN Homecoming Parade– Calling all future DGN students!  Order your shirts with your graduation year to walk in the DGN homecoming parade on Friday, October 4th right after school!  Shirts are $12.00/each.  A flyer will be sent home with students soon, and you can click here to order.  ORDERS ARE DUE FRIDAY 9/27! STEAM– Currently enrolling for Language Labs and Chess Scholars. Please remember to like and follow Pierce Downer PTA on Facebook for flyers and info. If you would like to be a part of our committee or see if it may be a good fit for your volunteering time, please email Kate Urban at kateberry6@gmail.com.  You can be involved as much or as little as you like!
  • Spanish, French and Mandarin: The Language Labs are back at Pierce Downer this year to host THREE different language classes: French, Spanish, and Mandarin.  Click herefor general information about all 3 language classes.  Click herefor the flyer and enrollment information. Classes begin the week of September 30th and run for 25 weeks. All students grades K-6.
  • Chess Scholars – Chess Scholars will be offering classes beginning next Monday, September 23rd from 2pm-3pm.  It will run for 9 sessions. No experience necessary; the class is open to all students (K-6). Children will be taught the game and have guided practice time. Click on this link for flyer and registration Chess Scholars Flyer.
Reading Games – The 2020 Reading Games team registration opens soon, so start forming teams! The Reading Games is a free and fun district-wide reading competition for District 58 students in grades 3-8. The program aims to introduce new genres of books to students and to encourage students to enjoy reading. Students form teams of 5-8 children, collaborate to read 12 books, and answer trivia questions.
Team registration opens on September 22 through October 15. All teams completing registration during this time will able to participate. The Games returns to O’Neill Middle School on Saturday, February 22. Please check the reading games website https://www.readinggamesdg58.com and click herefor the list 1 and list 2 books. Charleston Wrap (Gifts & Goods Fundraiser) – REMINDER, order deadline is today, Tuesday 9/17 for Charleston Wrap Fundraiser! Click hereto order online. School Code: 11468.  Great holiday gift ideas, items will be received and distributed before winter break.  50% of all wrapping paper sales and 40% of all kitchen and home items will go directly to Pierce Downer PTA!  Please contact Vikki Jacknow with any questions at victoriajacknow@gmail.com.

Annual Giving Campaign – Many PD families have already participated in our annual giving campaign – thank you to all those that have contributed! Please consider donating $85/per student to fund all of our current PTA programs (or donating an amount that suits your family).  We hope to have 100% participation this year.  The amount we receive from this campaign will determine the rest of the year’s fundraising goals. Battle of the Bands– Hey Pierce Downer Parents, Please consider signing up to play in a band for Battle of the Bands this year! Artcot– Artcot Museum will be on Friday, October 25th. We need parents interested in planning, gathering supplies, and running an art room.
No experience needed nor do you need an art background to help. You can choose your room or we can provide you art projects and ideas.

If so, consider joining the Service Learning Committee or being a co-chair. Do you like to plan STEAM (Science/Technology/Engineering/Art/Math) classes for students at our school? Consider joining the STEAM Committee. Do you enjoy teaching kids? Consider being a Junior Great Books Parent Leader some weeks this winter. Any interest in helping with Earth Week, Fun Run, Panther Pacers, Survivor Snack Challenge, Morning Yoga, Fitness, Nutrition, Waste Free Wednesdays, helping with the Monarch Way Station or Butterfly Garden? Consider Joining Healthy Kids Committee to help with one or all our events.
In addition, the Variety Show is looking for a chairperson(s), please consider helping to continue this amazing Pierce Downer student showcasing tradition which takes place at the Tivoli!! Take a look at the sign up and consider joining any of these by clicking here.

Annual Giving Campaign – It’s been a great start to this new school year and your PTA has been hard at work!  What we worry about the most at this time is “are we going to raise enough money to support all of our PTA sponsored programs this year?”  We sure hope so!   That’s why we are again launching our Annual Giving Campaign! This year it will cost the PTA $85/per student to fund all of our current programs. If every family donated $85 per child, we would not have to do any other fundraisers.  While we know this isn’t possible, we are asking parents to donate what suits your family.  We hope to have 100% participation this year.  The amount we receive from this campaign will determine the rest of the year’s fundraising goals. Charleston Wrap (Gifts & Goods Fundraiser) – Thanks to all who have participated in our Gifts and Goods fundraiser (packets went home last week).  If you have not yet participated, keep in mind that 50% of all wrapping paper sales and 40% of all kitchen and home items will go directly to the Pierce Downer PTA! You can order online or with an order form, additional packets are available in the school office. The sale runs through next Tuesday, September 17th.
